The Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS) at the University of Kent and King's College London have joined forces to create the ground-breaking Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships Programme 'Knowledge Orders before Modernity' (KOM). The program investigates the potential of the handwritten word in comparison, both before and after the invention of the printing press, both inside and outside of Western societies. It aims to refute the traditional periodization that links the evolution of Western print culture to complicated knowledge, intricate archiving processes, and banal recording.
