Since 1917, there have been international fellowships. The program offers assistance to non-citizens and permanent residents of the United States who wish to pursue full-time graduate or postdoctoral studies in the United States with the goal of returning home to pursue professional careers. Women who are members of Graduate Women International (see the list of GWI affiliates) may be eligible for a restricted number of prizes for study abroad (excluding the applicant's native country). Support is provided for graduate and postgraduate study at recognized American universities.
Eligibility for AAUW International Fellowships in USA for Women:
- The candidate must be a citizen of a nation other than the United States or, if they are resident here, have a nonimmigrant visa. Women who hold U.S. citizenship, permanent residency in the United States, or dual citizenship with another nation, either now or at any point during the fellowship year, are not eligible.
- By the application deadline, the student must have an academic degree (obtained domestically or outside) that is equal to a bachelor's degree from the United States.
- During the fellowship year, intend to dedicate themselves entirely to the suggested academic plan.
- After completing their education, the student plans to return home to seek a professional job.
- Possess English language competency and attest to it by presenting one of the Required Components (see below), which include transcripts from English-speaking universities, specific English proficiency tests, or a written declaration attesting to the applicant's natural fluency in the language. Candidates should prepare for and take the test as soon as feasible if they intend to take one of the recognized English proficiency examinations. Questions concerning the exams should be addressed to the test provider.
