The late Mr. Charles John Bishop left a bequest to the University of Auckland in his will, which was used to establish the Bishop Music Prizes to support the department's study of musical composition. There will be two prizes awarded: a Junior Prize to the student with the highest grade in MUS 111 and a Senior Prize to the student with the greatest grade in either MUS 211 or MUS 311.
Eligibility for Bishop Music Prizes at the University of Auckland:
- Every year, a $1,000 Junior Prize will be given to the student with the highest grade in MUS 111 who plans to continue their composition studies in the year after the award.
- The student who has the highest grade in MUS 211 or MUS 311 and who plans to continue studying composition in the year after the award will receive one Senior Prize of $1,000 per year.
- After receiving the Junior Prize, a student is eligible to receive the Senior Prize.
- If there is a tie, the Prize may be split, as decided by the Head of the School of Music.
Application Process:
Students are not required to fill out an online application or apply for this scholarship, award, or prize. It is given out based on the advice of the appropriate University of Auckland committee or faculty.
Selection Process:
- Nomination is made to the Scholarships Office
- The Prize is awarded by the University of Auckland Council on the recommendation of the Selection Committee.
