In 1998, the scholarship was created as a result of Howard Sleath donating half of his inheritance to the University of Queensland. Instrumentalists all around Australia knew Mr. Howard Sleath for his superb workmanship and expertise as a stringed instrument manufacturer. A string quartet of instruments from Mr. Sleath was given to the State of Queensland to be maintained under the direction of the Head of the School of Music. At a 1974 event to launch the Howard Sleath Quartet of Instruments, the Mayne String Quartet gave a firsthand demonstration of the instruments.

Candidate should be enrolled full-time in the first year of the Bachelor of Music (Honours)
