A prize will be awarded to the full-time LLB or LLB(Hons) student who, after Part III, achieves the highest GPA across all law courses. The late Sir Alexander Howat Johnstone, Q.C., who served as the Vice-President and a member of the University of Auckland Council for many years, left a will that founded the Prize.
Regulations for Sir Alexander Johnstone Prize in Law:
- Every year, the Prize will be given to the full-time LLB or LLB(Hons) student who has completed all required and elective law courses with the highest GPA up until Part III. The student should have attained a GPA of at least 7.00 as a minimum requirement. Should there be a tie, the student with the highest cumulative score shall get the Prize (see Note I).
- The University of Auckland Council will grant the Prize based on the Dean of the Faculty of Law's proposal.
- Should there be a tie, the Faculty of Law Dean will decide whether the Prize can be divided.
- If no candidate with adequate quality is found, the University of Auckland Council will not be required to make an award in any given year.
- As long as the primary goal of the Prize is not compromised, the University of Auckland Council may change or modify these rules.

Students are not required to fill out an online application or apply for this scholarship, award, or prize. It is given out based on the advice of the appropriate University of Auckland committee or faculty.
