Purpose:
The fellowship can be used to support research and study related to the archaeology of Portugal, including the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira. This includes, but is not limited to, excavations, research projects, colloquia, symposia, publications, and travel for research or to academic meetings for the purpose of presenting papers on the archaeology of Portugal. Funds may not be used for institutional overhead, institutional administrative recovery costs, or institutional indirect costs.
Eligibility for the Archaeology of Portugal Fellowship:
- Applicants from Portugal who already hold PhDs must have been AIA members in good standing for at least one year by the time of application; Portuguese graduate students must become AIA student members in order to apply for the fellowship.
- Portuguese graduate students wishing to study in the United States must be enrolled in or have been accepted to an accredited US university or college, and must provide evidence that they have been authorized to travel to and study in the US. If the applicant is currently studying at a US institution, transcripts are required (send to fellowships@archaeological.org, unofficial and official transcripts are both accepted).
- Portuguese nationals seeking funds for research or study in the US must provide a detailed plan of their project that includes the institutions and organizations with which they will be affiliated while in the US. All Portuguese applicants must provide proof of Portuguese citizenship (via passport information).
- Applicants from the U.S. or countries other than Portugal must have been AIA members in good standing for at least two years (one year if still graduate students) and must send in their US transcripts to fellowships@archaeological.org (unofficial and official transcripts are both accepted).
- At the conclusion of the project and/or supported period of study, recipients must submit a report to the Chair of the AIA Fellowships Committee.
- Recipients who use the award for excavation and research are also expected to submit an abstract within two years of receiving the award to be considered for participation in the AIA Annual Meeting.
